The Fall of Cyrn Waethelin
Cyrn Waethelin, 5th Nov 2100, 4am
The party rest and pray for the remainder of the night. Near dawn, it begins to rain
heavily.
Cyrn Waethelin, 5th Nov 2100, morning
Myrril is questioned again about the frequency of food and magic deliveries. The former
come once a week or so; the latter are very irregular, presumably determined by when the
agents can make up a load - Myrril has no connection with or interest in that side.
Spy is sent - very carefully after being shot at once! - to recce. He notes
one of the barracks has been dismantled and used to produce a breastwork along the whole
front of the Cyrn
there are marks of something very heavy being dragged from the now-burned-out black roof
house to the manor house. The party surmise that this is whatever magical dingus breaks
down the items for.. whatever the end product is.
the rope is gone from the well - that trick has been discovered and the well is probably
watched.
the three surviving carts and their horses are now up near the manor house, the carts
filled with tarpaulinned loads
Towards the end of the day, two soldiers emerge from the gates, walking down the road
with a very strange, stiff gait. After around a hundred yards they stop, bend down and do
something. This happens twice more, after which they go back inside. It dawns on the party
that these are range markers for the crossbowmen.
An epic bout of planning ensuses, with all sorts of options - wait them out, frontal
assault, aerial bombardment, go away - being looked at in enormous detail
Cyrn Waethelin, 7th Nov 2100, morning
Chambu makes up three leather coin-purses, lavishly filled (with copper pieces!) and
with Glyphs of Warding cast on them
The decision is finally reached to repeat the airborne attack of the 5th, this time
aiming for the carts and the food stores.
Baylock flies his new carpet, while Chambu and Talian ride a hippogryph. Nazariel
repeats her method from before, as does Baggy; on her way to her covert, the paladin pulls
up the range markers, intending to replant them incorrectly on the way out.
Chambu drops the purses close behind the new wall, which is garrisoned with crossbowmen
all along its length, and Baylock empties his pouches of lamp oil onto the thatched roof
of the barn. When all is ready, Nazariel places a Fireball on the carts and their
loads. They catch fire - but don't explode - and the tied horses panic and flee.
Baggy sneaks up to the wall and tries to psych out the soldiers on guard; this works to
some extent as some run for the gate, but one is shot by one of his ex-comrades
The airborne contingent orbit, raining missiles and spells down on the Cyrn. The light
of the burning carts is enough to illuminate Nazariel, however, and as she shoots a Fireball
at the three assistant wizards she finds another one coming the other way. Emerging from a
bloom of orange fire, she ducks and weaves toward her next target.
Chambu dives to spell range and Summons four Celestial Bears who are directed
at the Lizard Wizards, while Baylock hovers, loosing arrows into them. Nazariel puts her
last Fireball into the oil-soaked barn, which catches fire most enthusiastically.
The soldiers on the wall break and flee through the gate and down the road.
This has the unfortunate side-effect of illuminating all three airborne groups, and
Daedoloth - up to now sneaking around Invisibly - launches a Fireball of
her own at the hippogryph whose wings catch the firelight beautifully as it banks. It
bursts full on; Chambu manages to duck down into cover (probably behind Talian) but Talian
and the Hippogryph take the full brunt. The hippogryph dies in the air, turns on its back
and plunges to the ground fifty feet below, taking Chambu and Talian with it.
[Lizzie had to pack up here, so we elected to have Nazariel hound the soldiers from
above to prevent her being in harm's way]
Hearing an elvish and dwarvish voice fall screaming followed by the boiler-works
clangour of Chambu hitting the ground, Baggy realizes things have gone wrong and sets off
into the now unguarded Cyrn on foot.
A combination of bears and arrows has finished the lizard wizards off, so the bears head
for Daedoloth and Baylock draws a bead on her. She is waving a fist and spouting a stream
of what look to be parting curses as she prepares to cast a spell - as Baylock drives an
arrow treated with Silence into her. She aborts her cast [of
Teleport] and starts trying to work out what has happened [failing the Intelligence roll to work it out]
The bears reach her as she discovers the problem and tears the arrow out. Despite her
considerable magical protection, the holy ursines rip at her with claws and teeth,
inflicting terrible wounds. Again, she tries to cast a spell, but Baylock's next arrow
sinks into her chest and her knees buckle. As they do, there's a flash as some sort of
magic happens and she vanishes. Chambu guesses this may have been a Contingency spell
kicking in.
Despite the frustration of their foe 'getting away', Baylock is reasonably sure that he
had delivered a mortal wound.
Silence falls, with the exception of the crackling of flames. The Battle of Cyrn
Waethelin is over....
