Desecrator

Chaotic and unpredictable sword created by binding a marilith to a holy devastator
1608

No two people who have seen this sword remember it alike. The basic elements of its appearance are consistent enough; a well-shaped longsword with carven silver hilts and a golden pommel.

The details, however, are subject to subtle shifts. Some see the hilts as sweeping, angelic wings, others as dæmonic talons. The pommel resembles either a grinning, empty-eyed skull or a warming sun.

The most striking variances, however, are in the patina of the metal. An effect similar to the 'watering' of Oriental steel marks the blade, but unlike the static colouration of a katana, the markings in the metal of Desecrator's blade move, flow and shift constantly as dark and light shades swirl and contend.

Those sensitive to such things are often shocked to discover that Desecrator registers positive on Detect spells for Good, Evil, Law and Chaos!

To hold Desecrator is to court bewilderment. Just as light and dark vie in the weapon's appearance, so do its empathic impulses urge the wielder towards acts of selfless altruism, black villainy, structured order or wild randomness. These coercions come in a wild inconsistent blizzard of feeling and a weak-willed holder can easily lose track of what ideas are his - and which are the blade's.

Desecrator was once a Holy Devastator named Durandana, looted from the body of the paladin Velarn by Surya of Tellare. It was then used as the binding object to imprison the Marilith demon Zabrayt.

The combination of a demon of overwhelming evil and power bound into a weapon of surpassing goodness has created an item powerful, dangerous and cursed.
