It appears that not all the rebellious slaves led by Gith escaped as was first believed. Some voluntarily remained in the thrall of their Ithilid masters, and took the name Githemorein, "Gith-who-stayed".
Hatred of the Githemorein is one of the few things the Githyanki and Githzerai can agree on.
