Hrothgault was a younger and lesser Kin, of Northman descent, who had yet to be given a significant command in the Dragon structure. As with most young Kin, he was expected to seek out opportunities to make himself successful and demonstrate his value to Varkar. His main achievement was to locate and secure the Sword of the Dead Legions, but this was not enough to save his life when he encountered the Dragonslayers early in their quest for Mergil
