DM Note: Yes, there's an element of Cheesy Fudge +5 in the intro here. If you're running for 2 players, you kind of want them in the same place when you start. |
In the six months since their extraplanar adventure, Gorfang and Eloy had each been deeply occupied with their own priorities. Now, in the face of a perplexing mystery and possibly the chance to get one over on each other, they were gathered again in Gorfang's underground realm of Gadûhvrás, gazing at a wall of rock.
One of the major unfinished pieces of business in the exploration of Gadûhvrás so far had been the failure to locate the throne hall. Many of his more committed followers felt it was a slight to their king that he could not rule from the high seat occupied by (presumably) so many darkly glorious predecessors - though little history from the days before the forces of the Dragon had wracked the city remained. Gorfang himself was far less bothered - he was king and would gut anyone who thought otherwise - but even he was interested to see the thing if it showed up.
Now, the orcs responsible for scouting the depths had returned, bringing word of an unusual place and a door they could not open. The scouts were largely made up of the hardened troops from Sar'Prime, unlikely to panic or exaggerate, so Gorfang and Eloy tackled up and went to look, leaving Sashia the Witch trading secrets with a group of Gadûhvrás' shamans.
Deep, deep under the re-occupied regions of the vast orc ruins, the scouts had discovered a long, pillared hall, split with a chasm, at the far end of which was a flat wall of plain stone. All along the rest of the hall the walls were decorated, carved and well-finished; far better than the majority of orc-work. The end wall, though, was plain and slightly melted-looking, and still marked with traces of soot and scorching. This marking highlighted the faint lines of joints, outlining a door twenty feet wide and fifty high. Several of the pillars bore signs as if something huge had tried to squeeze along the room where there was not room - and it was not a small room.
Although the Dark Beast Varkar Barduric had personally burned out the orc-hold of Gadûhgon, history recorded that human troops, led by lizardman officers, had destroyed Gadûhvrás. Yet, unless they were much mistaken, here were signs that a dragon of considerable size had tried to break into this place - and had failed.
